Are Oral Contraceptives Effective for Treating Hair Loss?

Hair loss or hair thinning is not experienced by men only. In fact, women too are victims of this problem. As in men, complete baldness is not very common in women, women mostly experience hair thinning specially from the top crown of the head. There can be a number of causes of hair loss in women. Androgenetic Alopecia is one of the common causes of hair loss. It is known as Male-Pattern Baldness in men and Female Pattern Baldness in women.

Female-Pattern Baldness is associated with hormonal imbalance. Women go through a series of hormonal changes throughout their life. Intake of birth-control pills, pregnancy, after child birth and menopause, all these factors play a major role in disturbing the hormonal functioning in women. These disturbed hormones affect the overall body including the natural and healthy hair growth.

Women have various choices to overcome hair loss due to hormonal balances. Medications such as Minoxidil, hair replacement treatments like surgeries or laser therapies and hair building products such as Toppik Hair Building Fibers, are different treatment methods for hair loss.

Recent studies have shown that oral contraceptives can also be an effective remedy for hair loss. Oral contraceptives or birth control pills are formulated using hormones named estrogen and progestin. These hormones prevent pregnancy by blocking the process of ovulation or ceasing the monthly release of egg.

These pills also function to reduce the levels of androgens in body. Androgens are male-hormones and there access in female body can cause hair loss on the scalp and unwanted hair growth on face, neck and chest. High levels of androgens actually cause Androgenetic Alopecia. So, when contraceptives are used, they help controlling the androgen levels hence preventing the hair loss.

Without any doubt, contraceptives are effective for controlling androgenetic hair loss but there are also some negative aspects of using these pills.  Following risk factors are attached with the intake of birth control pills:

  • Increased risk of stroke, blood clots and heart attack.
  • Acne
  • Unwanted facial hair growth
  • Weight gain
  • Sore breasts
  • Increase in risk of breast cancer
  • Nausea

Contraceptives can have varied effects on women. The pills are not suitable for all. For instance, women who smoke or drink are at higher risk of getting strokes and heart diseases. These pills can accelerate the problems in female smokers.

Furthermore, it should also be noted that all the contraceptives are not used for hair loss treatment. The ones with low androgen index can control hair loss. Pills with a high androgen index can worsen the hair loss in women. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor before using any medications for treating hair loss.

Other than these medications, there are other ways for dealing with hair loss as well. Toppik offers a series of hair building products that not only provide an instant thick and full hair look but they also contribute in controlling the hair thinning and hair loss. Toppik Hair Building Fibers and Toppik Hair Building Shampoo & Conditioner are quite effective for that purpose.
